Adventures Into The Unknown

Harry Donenfeld was a comics pioneer...well, sort of. He had been kicking around the publishing business for a while. In the 20’s he was responsible for producing books in the popular “Pulp” genre - his always bore particularly racey “bodice-ripper”-types of covers, and several of his titles did indeed include the moniker “Spicy…”

As time moved on, he established and owned National Allied Publications. This was the company which became known as publishing some of the first comic books, and was more known as DC Comics. After issuing some humor and adventure books, a young creative team, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel approached Donenfeld with the character Superman. Donenfeld didn’t like the idea at all, but still reluctantly included it in his new title, Action Comics. The rest, as they say, is history.

Donenfeld made his fortune with National/DC, but he also owned a piece of another company; American Comics Group - better known as ACG. This was a joint-owned operation with Benjamin W. Sangor, Harry’s old pal, who ran a studio in the late 30’s producing ready made material for syndicated newspaper comics sections (The Sangor Shop ended up producing the characters and supplying stories featuring The Black Terror, Pyroman, and Fighting Yank for Pines' Nedor Comics and produced most of the comics for Pines until 1945). Having the two key elements, business and content, Sangor and Donenfeld started ACG in 1943.

It took awhile for the company to have any traction, but after former Sangor associate editor and administrator Fred Iger (no relation to Jerry) bought into the business, in 1948 ACG brought out the title Adventures Into The Unknown, a horror/supernatural/science fiction book which pre-dated many of the rival publisher’s own offerings in this genre, which would become the dominantly popular comic book genre(s) for the next decade.

Adventures Into The Unknown was to become one of the longest running comics of this type, running for just short of 20 years until 1967. The book remained of consistent artistic quality in the 40’s by employing a mix of reliable staffers (Edvard Moritz, Charles Sultan), and freelance/journeymen (Fred Guardineer, Al Feldstein, Paul Rienman, Bob Lubbers).

Moving into the 50’s, ACG adopted the same production model blending staffers (Ken Bald, King Ward, Pete Riss,Leonard Starr, Harry Lazarus) with contributions by established artists and up-and-comers (Al Williamson, Al Camy,Ogden Whitney, Kurt Schaffenberger, Rocke Mastroserio, Jack Abel, Creig Flessel).

One interesting experiments Adventures Into The Unknown attempted was during the height of the initial 3D craze; they developed something they called "TrueVision," a process that includes black borders and zipatone to create a three dimensional effect without glasses. In 1954, issues #51 through #58 featured two or three stories using this novelty. It really didn't work, and they dumped the idea by the winter of that year.

The book, not really being known as one of the most violent or provocative comics on the market, did survive the advent of the Comics Code Authority, with issue #62 from April of 1955 being the first to bear the “CCA” Stamp. Adventures Into The Unknown still sold consistently well as they forged into the 60’s.

Many of the creative team from the previous decade remained faithful to ACG and contributed well into the new decade, with occasional stories by John Buscema and Pete Costanza - two artists that would get lots of work going forward. In 1965, American Comics Group even threw its hat into the superhero-revival arena with the introduction in issue #154 of the character Nemesis, capably rendered by frequent Jack Kirby inker Chic Stone. The Nemesis stories ran through issue #170 (Feb. ‘67), having not really captured the imagination of the public the way rival Marvel and DC characters would.

AITU ran another four issues, with the same format as before, and ceased production in August of 1967.

The pre-code issues of this book - those before 1955 -  are the most inventive and collectible of it’s long run, but it was always a consistently enjoyable title, if a bit low-key.
