In 1940 the cartoonist and comic book legend Will Eisner created The Spirit. A masked crimefighter who first appeared as the main feature of a 16-page, tabloid-sized, newsprint comic book insert as a part of the Sunday edition of Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers. 20 Sunday newspapers carried it in total.
