80 Page Giant
August 1964 - October 1965
Issue Count: 56 (All 80 Page Giant Issues)
80 Page Giant (Eighty Page Giant) was a series introduced by National Comics (DC) in August of 1964. It most often rreprinted stories and features from the Golden Age. The series began with 15 issues then splintered off into the actual series as sequentially numbered books. An example of this would be Flash #160. This is an 80 Page Giant but is clearly numbered #160 indicatig it is part of the Flash regular series. If you examine it just a bit closer you will notice a small "g21" next to the "t" in "giant". This letter plus number designation denotes that it is in fact 80 Page Giant 21 as well as Flash 160!
This alone was not the only thing that seperated this new series from it's many counterparts. It was also twenty five cents when most other books of the time were only twelve cents. The double price could hardly be disputed due to the value. It was like getting half a comic for free! This sucker was, you guessed it, EIGHTY PAGES! The average book at the time was a mere 32 pages. But still, a whole quarter? That was a good sum in 1964. For comparison a loaf of bread was only twenty one cents. Perhaps that was a sign of things to come. Today a comic book is $4 and bread is $3. The more things change the more tehy stay the same!
Either way, if you have any of these Silver Age gems you might have some books worth a few bucks but you definitely have some good reading available!
