Batman Number 3 was first published in 1940 by DC Comics. It is the first time Catwoman appears in the comic and features iconic cover work by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. The script is by Bill Finger.
Interesting Facts
The third issue of Batman is exceptionally rare and features the villain by the name of the ‘Puppet Master’.
The cover is a stunning black featuring both Batman and Robin in their classic outfits. The striking thing about the cover is that it is considered the inspiration for the cover of the animated film, “Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders”
The title of Issue 3 is “The Strange Case of the Diabolical Puppet Master”.
What's Batman #3 worth in 2021?
GPA records a CGC NM 9.4 copy as the highest graded copy on record. That book sold for $32,000 in 2010. a CGC NM+ 9.6 might easily bring $100,000 to $125,000 if discovered today. A mid grade CGC FN 6.0 sold for $6,000 in 2019 as opposed to just $2,000 in 2010. Those are actually very soft numbers when you consider the age and subject matter. In 2019 a copy sold for just $3,000 in a CGC GD/VG 3.0. That same issue was nearly $1,500 in 2010. We believe these early issues of Batman are exceptional Golden Age values given the popularity of the character and comparable values of similar Golden Age books such as early Action Comics issues. At some point the market will correct this and you want to have a few in your catalogue when it happens!
Why is this comic book valuable?
Batman #3 is even more scarce than the first issue. There are only 232 total books reported to the CGC Census. It has a mostly black cover that is hard to find in high grade.
The story revolves around hypnosis and Batman ends up fighting the police as he robs a jewellery store.
The story starts with Batman and Robin seeing a Dr being bumped into and then scratched. After an investigation, they discover that the Doctor has been hypnotised and is giving away secret formulas.
An incident on the train leads Batman to also becoming hypnotized which leads to him committing the robbery and taking the stolen jewels back to the house of the Puppet Master.
Fortunately for the dark knight, Robin slaps him to his senses and they then go onto capture the Puppet Master
