Star Spangled Comics

DC Comics // October 1941 - July 1952
Issue count: 130

Many DC heroes went through the ranks of Star Spangled. Debuting in 1941, we got STAR SPANGLED KID, NEWSBOY LEGION w/ THE GUARDIAN, ROBOTMAN, LIBERTY BELLE, & ROBIN's solo adventures! Golden-Age collectors clamor for these top-dollar books!

Star Spangled Comics

Star-Spangled comics, which debuted for DC in 1941, started off as being a vehicle for heroes The Star-Spangled Kid & Stripesy, who had the lead story for the first 6 issues.

But then, the oft-recalled "defection" of the creative team of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby - already titans in the industry - to DC from Timely Comics ended up taking precidence over other features with any of their creations bcause of their credibility.

Thus, with issue 7, and for the rest of the run, the lead story and cover ended up being S&K's Newsboy Legion with The Guardian. An exiting series injected with a bit of humor, became a best-seller for about 30 issues, at which time Joe and Jack were drafted.

The rest of the S&K stories were "ghosted" by other writers and artists (most notably a very young Gil Kane!).

However, Star-Spangled was an anthology book, and did feature some fantastic underrated or obscure heroes - Star-Spangled Kid was allowed to remain, but we also got long running entries featuring of The Tarantula, TNT with DYNA-MITE, Robotman, and Liberty Belle!

All this makes SSC a most sought after, valuable title among Golden-Age aficianados, the Simon & Kirby stuff is more desired -  but all have value!
