Mysterious Adventures

Story Comics // March 1951 - August 1955
Issue count: 25

Zombies! Curses! Dismemberment! Torture! Bound women! Story Comics, Inc. brought it all to the table with Mysterious Adventures! They did manage to survive for a couple issues after the CCA was implemented! Treasured finds!

Mysterious Adventures

There is remarkably little information out there about the publisher Story Comics. One must assume that they were small, if only for the fact that they released just 6 different titles between 1951 and 1955, most of them lasting for very short runs with not a lot of issues.

It is suspected that journeyman artist Harry Harrison may have had a stake in the company, as he is often listed as Editor.

Fairly tame by comparison to some other companies books in this genre, Mysterious Adventures did have their fill of voodoo-doll rituals, bondage, shrunken heads, death by quicksand. live cremation, and even a human skull being used as a bowling ball!

However, MA’s real stock-in-trade appeared to be the “ironic-revenge” story. For example, a surgeon strapped to the operating table about to be cut open by a team of undead that he had killed in the OR while alive, a terrified man being driven in a car to his death by the skeletons of the five people he killed in a drunk driving accident, skeletons of the men he framed in life forcing an inmate into the electric chair, the ghost of a climber whose line was cut returning to cut the line of the climber that killed him.

Creative duties, well, at least the artists - as most of the writing is uncredited, seem to be the contributions of mostly freelance guys who made the rounds at lots of companies during this time : Walter Johnson, Ed Goldfarb, A.C. Hollingsworth, Bill Fraccio, Lou Cameron, John D’Agostino, Harry Harrison (aforementioned as performing editorial duties), Hy Fleishman, Doyle Cohen, Jay Disbrow, Dick Beck, Bill Savage, Mannie Banks, Al Gordon and Ted Galindo. There were a few “known” names too - Doug Wildey, Ross Andru, Charles Nicholas, and Kurt Schaffenberger.

But adding to the mystery, there are a good number of stories for which even the artist is unknown.

This little obscure title is very collectible, demanding respectably high prices on the market.
