Fantastic Four

Marvel // November 1961 - September 1996
Issue count: 416

This is the book that ushered in the "Marvel Age of Comics!" The FF's popularity virtually changed the focus of the whole industry back to the superhero genre! So many characters made their first appearances here - these books can be a sound investment!

Fantastic Four

Premiering a matter of months before the other character, Spider-Man, that is considered to have ushered-in "The Marvel Age of Comics," that is, loosely defined, the period in the early 60's which led to the explosion of the popularity of the superhero genre, The Fantastic Four #1 is practically "ground-zero" for what modern hero titles would become for the next 50 years (or so)!

Sure, DC had already successfully revived many of their characters that made them famous in the 40's - in addition to ones that never went away (i.e. Superman, Batman...), but the collective vision of Stan Lee and his biggest creators in the Marvel "bullpen" was something completely new in scope; while DC's superheroes were bland, and one dimensional by comparison, Marvel injected each new character with a decidedly "human" set of values. They had complex personalities, psychological hang-ups, sometimes tragic backstories, and engaged with each other while "real-life" day to day problems occurred; it wasn't just a "get the bad guy" mentality, with each storyline wrapping up neatly until the next month.

This was a revolutionary idea for hero comics in 1961 - giving the characters actual adult depth!

The Fantastic Four kicked it all off, with a carefully constructed world containing a who's-who of recurring personalities, alternate universes, supporting characters that mattered, and complicated villains, with motives that informed their mis-deeds as opposed to just simply being "greedy."

The FF lived in New York, a real city with real places to reference, and when the bad-guys DID come, the reader was more invested in the storyline - this was NOT Metropolis!

The "Four" had their own personalities and roles within the group; Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), the leader, A-Type, cerebral, stoic, cool-under-pressure, level headed, scientific genius, father figure. Sue Storm (Invisible Girl), supportive girl-friend, loving wife, protective sister, the emotional center. Ben Grimm (the Thing), the brawn, hot-headed, quick-tempered, often bitter, street-wise, heart-of-gold, best friend. Johnny Storm (The Human Torch), juvenile, inconsiderate, ego-driven, the clown...

And, oh yeah, they got superpowers, too. Reed can stretch! Sue can make herself disappear and make invisible force fields! Ben (kinda the one that got the short end of the stick), mutated into a grotesque, but extremely strong, rock-like behemoth! Johnny can turn his body into fire, and throw flames!

Even the villains and supporting characters introduced in key issues right from the beginning are iconic on their own merits; Doctor Doom, Sub-Mariner (ressurected in the title), The Inhumans, The Watcher, The Silver Surfer, Galactus, The Skrulls, Ultron,The Black Panther, the Crusader, Impossible Man...

The quality of the Fantastic Four as a comic book is a testament to the creatives that contributed over the years; Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Joe Sinnott, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, George Perez, Archie Goodwin, John Byrne and on and on!

Collectors love the earlier 60's run - potentially very valuable books - but the bronze-age issues are heating up in the market!

Key Art: Comic Book Price Guide

Issue #1

What's Fantastic Four #1 worth in 2024?

Fantastic Four #1 the highest recorded sale of the book was $1500,000 back in April 2022. That was a NM- 9.2, not the NM+ 9.6 which is the highest recorded grade. When a NM+ 9.6 finally sells it is impossible to guess what it will bring simply because the opportunity to own it, if you have deep enough pockets, is so rare! What a NM/MT 9.8 might bring if ever discovered, would be astronomical, easily in the million dollar range. FN 6.0 command upwards of $31,000 currently compared to $10,000 in 2009. Similarly in 2009 GD 2.0 would cost you $1,500 and will easily cost you 5x that now in the $13,000 range. You won't find any deals as it relates to this book but if you land one you will find it worth more than you paid in just a couple of years. This is a blue chip comic book investment you can count on.

Why is this comic book valuable?

You may already know this story since Stan "The Man" Lee's death in 2018 was so well publicized but you may not know all the details. Yes Stan Lee created the Fantastic Four because he was burned out and he decided to make the team more adult oriented. What you may not know is Stan's boss, Martin Goodman, ordered Stan to create a super hero team! Goodman had been golfing with his National Publishing/DC Comics counterpart and was told about the recent success of the Justice League of America that had debuted in Brave and the Bold #28 a few months earlier. Martin Goodman was known as a trend jumping publisher that would ride good ideas to green pastures by improving on them. So the order was issued to Lee. Create a super-team.

Once given the directive Stan decided to break the mold. No more talking to his audience like they were 8 years old. His characters would have real problems and real relationships and they would have morals and moral dilemas. Once he put pen to paper and the world of the FF started developing he began to have more ideas but he only really had one goal as 60 minutes reported back in an interview in 2002:

CBS asked Lee did he realize at the time that this was a totally new thing? To which Lee replied, "Not at all. I was just trying to make up some new characters so that I would keep my job, keep eating and paying the rent," says Lee. "And I hoped the books would sell. We didn't think we were doing anything revolutionary."

But what he was doing was indeed revolutionary and the Silver Age would become Marvel's coming out party. It's true that National Publications/DC Comics heralded in the Silver Age back in 1956 with Showcase #4 featuring an all-new Flash (Barry Allen) but it was this book that started it all. The catalyst for the books you hold in your hands today from both companies, the movies, the merchandise. Fantastic Four #1 will always be a "holy grail" for ANY collector and will command a premium in any condition. Period.

What's Fantastic Four #2 worth in 2024?

With one CGC NM/MT 9.8 copy known to exist that sold for $65,000 in 2013 we can guess what the value might be if the same copy sold today. It certainly might enjoy a healthy increase but a new successful film franchise could push prices to amazing new heights. These lower number issues are poised for a significant return on the investment. A FN 6.0 in 2009 brought around $1,000 and today that same issue might go for $3,500. While that is a healthy return it doesn't match the rise by percentage of some other books that have recent films. The lower grades are extremely affordable with GD 2.0 copies that went for $260 in 2009 bringing almost double today at $1499. You always want to purchase the highest grade you can afford but even lower grade copies of these issues are a solid buy.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Fantastic Four #2 is not just any second issue but THE second issue of the Stan Lee and Jack Kirby era of collaboration. It also is the second appearance of the FF4 as well as containing the first mention of the "Daily Bugle", made famous for being Peter Parker's workplace. If that isn't enough it also contains the first appearance of the Skrulls, an alien race that would battle early and often in the Marvel Universe. Only 20 copies exist over VF/NM 9.0 according to CGC Census data.
