Captain America Comics

Timely Comics, that would become Marvel Comics, was firmly established as one of the best comic book publishers since the debut of Marvel (Mystery) Comics #1 in October of 1939. Lead characters The Human Torch, The Sub-Mariner, and the Angel became popular with readers since the word “go.” But the best was yet to come…

There had already been other “patriotic” heroes introduced by other companies, and, with Hitler advancing in Europe, sentiment for America to get into the fight ran high in certain quarters. But in March of 1941, comicdom had never seen the overt boldness as the image on the cover of Captain America Comics #1 - here was the most patriotic superhero of all actually punching Hitler in the face!

The brainchild of Timely staffers Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America would soon blow away all other defenders-of-the-flag and take his place in history as one of the most iconic and recognizable figures in the Superhero Universe!

Steve Rogers, wanting to contribute in any way to the war effort, is rejected as 4-F at the army recruiting station because he is too skinny and sickly, decides to volunteer for a secret government program which aims to create “super soldiers” using a newly developed serum created by Professor Reinstein - a scientist we are to assume fled from Germany during the rise of the Nazi party. Rogers gets chosen first for the program and is injected with the “Super Soldier Serum,” and immediately undergoes a dramatic transformation into a super strong, muscular man. Just then, Nazi fifth-column spies who have infiltrated America break into the laboratory and shoot Professor Reinstein, resulting in his death.

The problem is, Reinstein never wrote down the formula - being paranoid that it could fall into the wrong hands - and the secret of the Super Soldier Serum died with him…

So what have we got? Well, we have Steve Rogers, who is at least one super soldier and is immediately tapped by the U.S. Government to carry out some of the hardest missions in their anti-war efforts (America was not even in the war yet, as Pearl Harbor was months away - but the writing was on the wall despite the loud protestations of Charles Lindbergh and other isolationists). The best way to get the newly dubbed and costumed ”Captain America” into the mix was to enlist him as an army private so he could be on the front-line and “become” Captain America when the situation dictated.

As news of Captain America’s successful breaking up of Nazi plots spreads quickly in the press and among the American fighting forces, Steve Rogers screws up and accidentally allows himself to be discovered in the middle of changing into his Captain America guise by Bucky Barnes, the teenage camp “mascot.” Seeing no other solution, Steve takes Bucky under his wing, meticulously trains him in the art of combat and tactics, and makes him Captain America’s fighting partner (he gets a costume, too, as well as a mask, but, oddly, retains his real name).

Timely and Joe Simon and Jack Kirby had an out of the box hit on their hands, and Captain America Comics flew off the shelves. This made Simon and Kirby very hot property in the comics industry. The team wrote and drew the book for the first 10 issues - classics, all of them - and were lured away from Timely by National/DC, who, let’s face it, had more financial resources to pay them well for their work than the more grass-roots, modest Timely.

But Captain America Comics endured as a popular best-seller, now in the hands of the very capable Al Avison, Al Gabriele, Syd Shores and, later, Don Rico. A very young Stan Lee would edit the book and often contribute scripts to the series (sometimes uncredited). Making a strong showing in sales figures, especially through the war in Europe and the Pacific, in 1946 Timely didn’t really know what to do with the character. Steve and Bucky were not in the army anymore, were mostly at home in the U.S.A., and were fighting assorted gangsters, early communist-threat-types, femme fatales and the like. Even fantasy and horror elements started creeping into the storylines, and Captain America Comics somehow kicked and scratched it’s way into Mid-1949, when the plug was finally pulled. America didn’t need “super” heroes anymore, we had the men that came back from the fighting in our own houses to look up to.

The first 10 issues under the creative direction of Simon and Kirby are worth a small fortune to collectors, but, indeed, the whole original Golden-Age run of Caps are extremely collectible, and demand more than respectable prices on the comics market! Key Art: Comic Book Price Guide

Issue #1

What's Captain America Comics #1 worth in 2024?

Captain America #1 in Mint condition would sell for at least $2,000,000 if it ever came up for sale.  A copy in CGC NM 9.4 from the San Francisco Pedigree recently sold for $$3,120,000, which is the highest public sale for this issue.  In mid and low grades, Cap #1 is still a very expensive book.  In FN 6.0, copies sell for $132,000. 10 years ago, you could have picked up a copy for $25,000!  In GD 2.0, copies went for $90,000 in September 2020.  In 2009, copies sold for only $10,000 or so.  We think Captain America Comics #1 is a blue chip comic that will hold it's value for years to come.  If you're looking for a copy, you won't go wrong picking up an unrestored copy in any grade.  Just don't expect the crazy price appreciation we have seen over the last decade.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Captain America Comics #1 introduces Captain America to an America getting ready to enter World War II in early 1941.   The first iconic issue features Captain America punching out Hitler on the cover.  Cap's biggest Nazi archenemy, the Red Skull, was also introduced in this issue!  Most superhero comics from this time period are propoganda pieces for the war, but Captain America is one of the the most blatant examples of this.  Cap has maintained his popularity over the last 80 years, appearing in cartoons, comics and the latest Marvel movies!

What's Captain America Comics #2 worth in 2024?

In Mint condition, Captain America Comics #2 would sell for $200,000 or more.  A CGC NM 9.4 sold for $178,000 in 2012, but more recently, in 2013, a CGC NM 9.4 sold for only $83,000.  This is a very scarce book due to the red cover.  In mid grade FN 6.0, the value of this book has climbed from $5,000 in 2009 to $18,600 today.  In GD 2.0, the value in 2009 was $1,000 and $3,000 in today's market.  The cover is not as dynamic as #1 or #3 (Classic Red Skull Cover by Alex Schomburg), so it's desirability is not as strong as for those 2 issues.  If you are in the market for Captain America Comics, I would not invest in this particular book.  Find a better cover in the run (there are many) and put your money there.  Buy this comic if you love it and for the piece of history that it is.
