Avengers

In 1963, Marvel decided to throw their hat in the ring and offer a "Super-Team," a concept that was more the territory of DC, with their highly successful Justice League of America, and introduce The Avengers, a team that was comprised of characters that each had their own degree of personal baggage, which would often create tensions within their own ranks!

For example, the first team had an ambivalence to the participation of the Hulk - an often volitle force, that with his brute strength would often just do what he wanted to do, which more than often was NOT following a leader; Iron Man, whose fragililty of health issues that would always be looming over the group's ability to get the job done. The constant bickering of Ant Man and Wasp, who were involved in a personal relationship, adding a strange dynamic in the context of the group, and, of course Thor, an actual God on earth, whose overbearing arrogance would get on everyone's nerve.

Ever changing members, The Avengers would make a major change within just the first 4 issues, with the discovery of a frozen Captain America, who turns out was in a state of "suspended animation" since the late 40's after plunging into the icy water after falling from a plane that exploded - taking the life of his young partner, Bucky Barnes. Cap would end up joining the Avengers, becoming their defacto leader, while having his share of turmoil over the hardship of adjusting to the "modern world."

Stan Lee was smart. He knew instictively that if he gave his heroes everday, real world problems, people would personally be more invested in their adventures. Go-To artist Jack Kirby handled most of the initial run, but with issue #9, thedrawing would be left in the capable hands of Marvel veteran Don Heck.

It's here in Don's tenure on the book that the personnel changes start happening. With issue #17, we see the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Hawkeye made permanent Avengers (exit Iron Man, Thor, Ant/Giant Man and the Wasp).

Throughout Heck's tenure on the book, they come up against a bunch of baddies that we first see in these pages : Kang, Power Man, The Black Widow, The Swordsman, and the Serpent.

Oh, and we get guest stars, too! Some good, some bad - like Spider-man, Hercules and Dr. Doom. Giant Man returns to the group (as Goliath), with gal-pal The Wasp in tow.

From here, the turnover is great, in characters and artists.

Roy Thomas takes over the writing from Stan, and John Buscema grabs the reigns of the art duties. Here we get bad guys The Red Guardian,The Super Adaptoid,Zemo,The Masters of Evil and The Black Knight... meanwhile, Black Panther joins in issue #53, The Vision is introduced in #57, Giant Man becomes Goliath, then becomes Yellowjacket i #59, and Hawkeye becomes The (new) Goliath! oh yeah, and Capt. America rejoins, too.

After brief but enjoyable art duties by Gene Colon and Barry Smith, now it comes to SAL Buscema's chance at the book, with a memorable storyline that involved the first appearance of what would become "The Invaders" in the 70's.

It's from here that major characters are introduced and the revolving door of creatives continues... we see the introduction of The Squadron Supreme, the re-boot of the "new" Captain Marvel, and the much revered Kree-Skrull War storyline - which gives us some great Neal Adams artwork. And of course THANOS becomes a growing concern...

Rich Buckler takes over as artist, and there are many encounters with notable Marvel celebs, Magneto, The Sentinals, Sub-Mariner, Silver Surfer, The FF, and more.

Veteran Bob Brown has a hand at the art, Steve Englehart assumes writing duties for a stretch, Hawkeye becomes Hawkeye again, Thor, Iron Man and Capt. America return to the fold...

The Avengers in many ways was Marvel's go-to book for featuring new characters, memorable cameos, and talent; it's impossible to list all the ins-and-outs throughout the next couple decades, but the highlights are The Beast and Wonder Man (re-booted) joining, writing stints by Gerry Conway, Jim Shooter, David Michelinie and others; artists like heavy hitters George Perez and John Byrne had career-defining runs.

With it's "all-hands-on deck" attitude and consistantly entertaining storytelling, The Avengers remains a highly collectible book with many key issues!

Issue #1

What's Avengers #1 worth in 2024?

The highest sale of Avengers #1 was a CGC graded NM+ 9.6 which went for $369,000 back in September 2021. Of course such a high grade copy is much more rare than the low to mid grade copies. Still, a CGC GD 2.0 copy has gone from $300 in 2004 to $2,300 in 2023. Similarly, CGC FN 6.0 graded books brought $6200 in 2023 versus just $750 in 2004. We recommend picking this book up in any grade making sure to get a clean, unrestored, and complete copy. The popularity of the cinematic Marvel Universe will keep this book in the spotlight for years to come.

Why is this comic book valuable?

After the huge success of the Fantastic Four (link) and the Amazing Spider-man (link) Stan Lee and Jack Kirby would strike gold again with Avengers #1 which showcased the 1st appearance and origin of the Avengers: Ant-Man (Hank Pym), Hulk, Iron Man, Wasp and Thor. This book is valuable not only for its status as a #1 issue but because it assembled some of Marvel’s most popular heroes from other books (Incredible Hulk, Journey Into Mystery, Tales to Astonish, and Tales of Suspense) into one book forming a new super-team.
