Action Comics

April 18, 1938 : The day that made Comic Book History with the publication of Action Comics #1. A writer from Cleveland, Ohio, Jerry Siegel, and artist, Joe Shuster, originally from Canada, but whose family emigrated to Cleveland, had met and created the most iconic superhero in America : SUPERMAN - and though the character had gone through many revisions, it took nearly six years it took to sell the Man Of Steel to a publisher!

Seigel and Shuster had found early work at National Allied Publications, which would ultimately become industry-leader DC Comics. They famously worked on some of the first titles to feature all original material, as opposed to previous comic "books," which merely reprinted newspaper dailies and Sunday color inserts in anthology form.

They had pitched Superman to National, but it was pushed aside and forgotten, until the company was forced to take on new partners due to lack of funds, and was re-booted as Detective Comics (DC). With the new regime in place, and the demand for new material high, the idea was was dusted off and given a chance as cover and lead story in ACTION COMICS #1, which would publish monthly.

The idea of a costumed Superhero was unprecidented at the time, and it wasn't until the overwhelming fan response came in that Superman gradually took over as the lead story in every issue, and in 1939, dominated the cover of every subsequent issue. Superman's popularity necessitated DC starting a new title in 1939 dedicated to 64 pages of only SUPERMAN stories (appropriately titled SUPERMAN).

Although written and drawn Seigel and Shuster (sometimes "ghosted" by others) for a good while through the mid 40's, other artists have been closely associated with the character over the years, most notably the excellent work of Wayne Boring, and later Curt Swan.

Action #1 is the most collectible comic book in history; the most recent issue on the market fetched over $3 million dollars! It goes without saying that almost the entire 1940's run of Action trade hands at high, high prices...

Most important may be the legacy of the introduction and high sales of all things Superman, which directly inspired even the smallest of publishing houses to follow suit and introduce their own Superhero titles - creating the immense popularity of the genre in the Golden Age!

Issue #1

What's Action Comics #1 worth in 2024?

The value of Action Comics #1 in Mint condition doesn’t exist that we know of to date.  If a CGC NM+ 9.6 copy came up for sale, we think it could sell for $8 million to $10 million.  The highest graded copy (untouched by restoration artists) is a CGC VF/NM 9.0 and sold for $3.2 Million back in 2014.  Of the 72 copies graded by CGC, only 40 are considered unrestored (not modified from it’s original state in any way). Even in low grade, copies can fetch $300,000 or more.  If you have a copy, someone will have to back up the Brinks Truck to buy it from you! If you’re looking for a copy, do your research, and be patient. It will take significant time to find a copy that you like at the price point that you want, especially if you’re looking for one that is unrestored.

Why is this comic book valuable?

The first appearance of Superman really needs no introduction does it?  For those of you living on planet Mars, Action Comics #1 was created by Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster in 1938 and kicked off the superhero genre as we know it.  All Marvel/DC Superheroes and movies owe their origins to this issue where it all began. Lois Lane also was introduced in Action Comics #1, adding to the demand for this issue. There are estimated to be less than 100 copies of Action Comics #1 left in existence out of a print run of 200,000.  The combination of scarcity and demand for the first American Superhero has skyrocketed the value in recent years. If you think you have a copy of an original Action Comics #1, make sure you check the cover for the 10 cent sales price. If it doesn't have 10 cent on the cover, then you're looking at a reprint which is worth a small fraction of the original's value.

What's Action Comics #2 worth in 2024?

The value of Action Comics #2 in Mint condition doesn’t exist that we know of.  If a CGC NM+ 9.6 copy came up for sale, we think it could sell for $400,000 to $500,000.  Currently, the highest graded copy (unrestored) is a CGC VF- 7.5 which last sold for $95,000 in May 2017.  On the CGC Census, there are 42 copies and only 20 of them are unrestored. This is a very scarce comic and thus values are harder to determine in any grade.  Low grade copies sell for a minimum of $20,000 if they are complete and unrestored.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #2 was published in 1938 and continued Superman’s adventures.  It features the 2nd appearance ever of Superman in comics as well as Lois Lane.  Action Comics was primarily an anthology featuring different characters in their own stories, but soon, Superman dominated the comic and it became known as a Superman title beginning with Action Comics #15.

What's Action Comics #3 worth in 2024?

The value of Action Comics #3 doesn’t exist in Mint condition that we know of.  If a CGC NM+ 9.6 copy ever comes up for sale, you might expect a sale price nearing $350,000 to $400,000.  The highest graded copy ever sold (unrestored) is a CGC FN/VF 7.0 which last sold for $55,000 back in June 2017.  This is a very scarce comic and thus values are harder to determine in any grade. Low grade copies sell for a minimum of $10,000 if they are complete and unrestored.  If you have a copy, count yourself lucky, they don’t come up for sale often. If you don’t have a copy and are looking for one, you won’t have the opportunity to be picky.  Just make sure it’s complete and unrestored, when one comes up for sale and you can’t go wrong.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #3 features the 3rd appearance in comics history of Superman and Lois Lane.  It is very scarce and is probably more rare than Action Comics #1. There are only 35 copies on the CGC census and of those, only 15 are unrestored.  There are most likely only 50 - 75 copies in the world of this issue, increasing demand whenever a copy does come up for sale.

Issue #4

What's Action Comics #4 worth in 2024?

The value of Action Comics #4 in Mint Condition would probably be in the $150,000 to $200,000 if it ever came up for sale.  CGC NM 9.4 is the highest graded any Action Comics #4 has achieved according to the CGC census. The highest graded copy ever publicly sold is a CGC VF 8.0 for $34,000 in March 2019.  There are 40 copies on the CGC census and only 22 of those copies are unrestored, so this is a very rare and scarce comic book. Low grade copies will sell for a minimum of $7,000 if they are complete and unrestored.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #4 is valuable due to its scarcity and being the 4th appearance of Superman in comic books.  Superman doesn’t appear on the cover again until issue #7, so these early issues between #s 2 and 6 aren’t as desirable as the covers with Superman on it.

What's Action Comics #5 worth in 2024?

The value of Action Comics #5 in Mint condition would probably be in the $100,000 to $150,000 range if it ever came up for sale.  CGC NM 9.4 is the highest graded any Action Comics #5 has achieved according to the CGC census. The highest graded copy ever publicly sold is a CGC VF- 7.5 for 31,200 in 2021.  Low grade copies sell for a minimum of $4,000 if they are complete and unrestored.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #5 is valuable because it’s the 5th appearance of Superman.  With only 21 unrestored copies on the CGC census, it’s a very scarce comic.

What's Action Comics #6 worth in 2024?

The highest graded known copy (CGC VF/NM 9.0) has no recorded sale. A CGC VF+ 8.5 copy sold in 2014 for $40,000. If a CGC NM+ 9.6 were to surface it would probably sale in the $250,000 range. While Superman does not appear on the cover of Action Comics #6 the first use of one of his most well known nicknames and first appearance of what would become one of his closes friends ensures the issue will command a premium in any condition. Complete and unrestored even very low grade copy (CGC GD 2.0) will cost a minimum of $4,000.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #6 is extremely valuable and sought after for 3 reasons. First reason, rarity, the CGC Census lists only 22 unrestored copies in existance and 19 restored. Second is the first appearances of Jimmy Olsen, only referred to as "Office Boy" in this issue. Last but not least the term "Man of Steel" is used for the first time.

What's Action Comics #7 worth in 2024?

A CGC VF 8.0 is the highest graded copy on record. The highest sale ever is a Court Pedigree 5.5, which sold for 204,000 in 2020.  A CGC NM+ 9.6 would easily bring something in the range of $1,000,000! To help understand the explosive value of the book we examine the information provided by the CGC Census. A low grade copy (CGC GD 2.0) that in 2002 for $2,500. The very next year that same book sold again for nearly $6,000.  In 2017 a CGC GD +2.5 (just half a grade higher) sold for over $70,000. One thing is for sure, if you are looking for one it will certainly bring top dollar.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Actions Comics #7 is valuable due to the second time Superman appears on an Action Comics cover as well as first use of his name on the cover. Even though this is the seventh issue of the series it has proven more desirable than issues #2 - #6 due to Superman's cover appearance. The CGC Census repoorts only 29 of 47 known copies are unrestored. That means you can certainly factor the rarity of the issue into the overall value as well!

Issue #8

What's Action Comics #8 worth in 2024?

The highest graded known complete and unrestored copy is a CGC FN+ 6.5. That issue has never made it to market so it could bring a premiumas the highest known graded copy. A CGC FN 6.0 sold in 2017 for $5,000. If a CGC NM+ 9.6 was discovered and brought to market it would most likely bring $150,000 to $200,000. The values of this book in relation to the previous seven issues is relatively low and at some point market demand will correct this. If you are a Action Comics fan or a comic book investor either one this is definitely one book to get while the prices are still in this range.

Why is this comic book valuable?

There are only 35 copies registered with CGC. Almost half of that number (17) are known to have been restored. That leaves 18 unrestored books containing the 8th appearance of Superman. Those figures might make Action Comics #8 one of the best values of the Golden Age of comics and here is why. These early issues of Action feature further character develoment quite often and #8 is no different. In this issue we discover Superman has "super hearing". In spite of that new information and partly because Superman does not appear on the cover this book doesn't command the premiums of the first seven issues of the series, however it is still sought after and valuable.

What's Action Comics #9 worth in 2024?

If a CGC NM+ 9.6 copy were discovered it most likely would bring $200,000 to $250,000. The highest graded copy on record (CGC F/VF 7.0) sold for $19,000 in 2008. Because Action Comics are generally some of the most valuable comics in the world they increase in value more slowly and steadily than other titles. Even the lowest known graded copy, a CGC Fair 1.0, sold for nearly $3,000 back in August of 2019. Bottom line - Action Comics will always bring maximum value.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Actions Comics #9 is Superman's 9th appearance in the series. He does not appear on the cover and there are no major character developments which is why it doesn't compare in price to the earlier issues. It is still an Action Comics #9 and theer are only 32 copies known via the CGC CEnsus. Half of those are restored so that means there are only 16 complete and unrestored copies in the world. Pretty rare by any standard!

What's Action Comics #10 worth in 2024?

According to GPA the last sale of #10 in a CGC VF/NM 9.0 brought $258,000 in 2011. That same issue would most likely bring around $325,000 or more today. A CGC NM+ 9.6 could easily top $700,000. In July of 2019, GPA reported that a coverless and incomplete copy (CGC Poor .5) sold for $1,500 (essentially just pages from the book). Unbelievably, in 2016 just the BACK COVER of the book - referred to as "No Grade" by CGC yet still certified by them as a Poor 0.5, sold for almost $2,500! Apparently even if you just have a piece of this comic you are in good shape.

Why is this comic book valuable?

It's a bird! It's a Plane! Action Comics #10 is the third cover appearance of Superman and he is in flight and punching an airplane. Children and adults alike would be captivated by this image in March of 1939. The only issues worth more than this one are Action Comics #1 (first appearance of Superman and on the cover) and #7 (second appearance on cover and seventh appearance in the book). CGC Census shows only 18 unrestored copies in the world.

The highest graded unrestored and complete copy is a CGC VF- 7.5. GPA reports that copy last sold for $7,000 in 2005. A CGC G/VG 3.0 pulled in $12,000 in 2018. This book in a CGC NM+ 9.6 would easily bring $150,000. We recommend picking this up in any grade due to scarcity especially if you are a Batman fan. You won't be disappointed.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Even though Superman's x-ray vision is revealed for the first time in Actions Comics #11 Action Comics #12 is more valuable. Surprisingly not because of Superman. This issue of Action contains an advertisment for another mainstream DC book, Detective Comics #27, and essentially what amounts to the first time Batman is seen in a comic book. CGC Census reports just 37 copies on record and only 24 of those being unrestored.

Out of the 24 unrestored copies known only 15 have ever made it to market. The highest graded copy, a CGC NM- 9.2, sold for $185,000 in 2011. To get an idea of how these issues appreciate you need to look at GP analysis' sale history for a copy that has changed hands more than once which is sometimes difficult with comics of this age. A CGC VF 8.0 copy sold for nearly $68,000 in 2011. In 2015 that same copy sold for $102,000, a profit of $34,000. Over a four year period there was probably no other market enjoying that rate of return. The 9.2 gradeed copy brought $117,000 more than the 8.0 graded copy that sld in the same year (2011). A CGC NM+ 9.6 would more than linkely bring between $300,000 and $350,000 if brought to market today.

Why is this comic book valuable?

We have all heard the phrase, "...more powerful than a locomotive...". Clearly a reference to the Son of Krypton. Action Comics #13, Superman's fourth cover appearance doesn't disappoint. The Man of Steel is stopping a speeding locomotive from shooting off the tracks! If that isn't a good enough reason for this issue to be so valuable it also features Superman's first super-villain, Ultra-Humanite and an advertisement for Superman #1. There are 44 known copies of this issue but only 24 of them are all original unrestored. Definitely a rare find.

What's Action Comics #17 worth in 2024?

If someone were to bring to market a CGC NM+ 9.6 copy of this issue we believe you could expect to fetch around $150,000 as a minimum, possibly more. A CGC F/VF 7.0 brought $25,000 in 2018. Some of the low grades fall into the somewhat affordable territory of under $10,000. GPA reports a CGC VG+ 4.5 sold for $8,000 in 2019 and a CGC GD 2.0 sold for $3,300 in 2018 as well. If you find yourself where your  opportunities line up you can't go wrong picking up such a early comic, especially with the Man of Steel on the cover.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #15 holds its value due to scarcity (only 75 copies on record) and a very early cover appearance for their flagship hero, Superman. Three more issues would come and go before Superman was on the cover of Action Comics to stay. This issue is probably the first Action Comics issue with Superman on the cover that is "affordable" in lower grades. Meaning some of the complete and unrestored low grade issues can be purchased for under $10,000.

A CGC NM+ 9.6 would most likely bring $250,000 to $275,000. A CGC GD 2.0, considered a low grade, sold for $1,000 in 2011 and $2,200 in 2018. We can see a mid grade copy brought $8,000 in September of 2017. It's our recommendation to grab these low grade copies while they are stable at low prices

Why is this comic book valuable?

Action Comics #19 is important and valuable because of how rare it is, of course, with only 71 unrestored copies registered with GPA. It would also see Superman continue on the cover from this issue on as the standard. Previously he had shared the cover, as an inset with other characters, or been removed from the cover entirely for the likes of Zatara the Magician. This issue also contains a full page ad for the 1939 World's Fair. This is also a very striking and bold cover with heavy use of red and green making Superman's pose very dynamic!

As such it has enjoyed very strong returns over the years. Let's take a look at GPA's numbers for a mid grade CGC Fine+ 6.5. One copy sold for $8,800 in 2012 then just six years later in 2018 that same book brought $37,500. Quite an increase. Even the low grade books like a CGC GD- 1.8 went from $1,400 in 2012 to $7,500 in 2018. We believe if someone had a CGC NM+ 9.6 might bring as much as $300,000. Lex Luthor is one of the world's most brilliant minds and most famous villains and he makes his first appearance in this issue. Not the bald, imposing figure most of us know but as a red haired business man. This particular story would also introduce us to The Daily Planet. The CGC Census reports less than 150 copies in existance.

It's possible transactions won't move until the single top copy VF/NM 9.0 sets the bar for prices at lower grades.

Issue #181

What's Action Comics #181 worth in 2024?

In June of 1953, the world first saw Action Comics #181. It has been traded a handful of times since, reaching a peak value of $320 in 2012. That copy was only graded at 5.5. For a 2.5 copy, a price of $50 was paid in 2011. There isn’t enough data to give a firm estimate on a modern 6.0, but it likely sits around $350.

Why is this comic book valuable?

Issue #182

What's Action Comics #182 worth in 2024?

If you wanted a brand-new copy of Action Comics #182, you would have to travel back in time to July of 1953. Otherwise, you’ll have to trade for a surviving copy, and the most expensive of those was $1768, which was paid for an 8.0 in 2018. If you want to get the price down, you could go after the 2.5 copy that sold for $98 in 2019. If you’re more about averages, then a 6.0 copy is currently worth around $200.

Why is this comic book valuable?
